World Breastfeeding Week
Mother Support: Going for the Gold!
August 1 - 7, 2008

In conjunction with the Olympics this coming August, World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding, breastfeeding. Mothers need support from society, their families, and their physicians to be successful. Pediatricians can support mother's choice to breastfeed by:
  1. Making a commitment to the importance of breastfeeding.
  2. Training all staff in skills necessary to support breastfeeding.
  3. Informing women and families about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.
  4. Assessing infants during early follow-up visits.
  5. Encouraging mothers to breastfeed on demand.
  6. Showing mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation when they will be away from their babies.
  7. Using appropriate anticipatory guidance that supports exclusive breastfeeding until infants are about 6 months old, and encouraging the continuation of breastfeeding as long as mutually desired by the mother and baby.
  8. Supporting breastfeeding by providing accurate information about maternal issues.
  9. Communicating support for breastfeeding in the office environment.
  10. Expanding the network of support for breastfeeding.
